HYROX pace vs 5K pace

Fresh-road speed is the anchor, not the answer. Convert a 5K or 10K result into a range you can test under compromised running.

STARTING TARGET
HYROX RUN RANGE5:38/km–5:58/kmA starting band for the eight timed run segments.
LATE-RACE CEILING5:60/kmBack off if stations drive you beyond this by lap 5.

Open near 5:43/km. This is a transparent heuristic built from a 10K-equivalent pace plus a compromised-running allowance—not a population percentile or guaranteed finish time. Sled ability, Roxzone congestion and wall-ball fatigue can move it substantially.

Why the pace is slower

HYROX alternates eight 1 km runs with SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, lunges and wall balls. The official format is fixed, but your response is not: leg fatigue, grip, station technique and transition congestion all change the next kilometre. Official race format.

  • Use the first two laps as a brake. If the target feels impressively fast before the sleds, it is probably too fast.
  • Train the transition. A treadmill 1K after rest does not validate a 1K after lunges.
  • Separate runs from Roxzone. Budget transitions in your finish time; do not silently hide them in run pace.

The converter's assumptions

A 5K is first converted to a 10K-equivalent pace with the common Riegel exponent. The calculator then adds a visible compromised-running allowance based on first-race experience and reduces it modestly for Doubles. This is a planning heuristic, not a model trained on official results.

Frequently asked questions

Should HYROX run pace be the same as 5K pace?

Usually no. Eight 1 km runs are separated by strength-endurance stations and transitions, so fresh 5K pace is normally too aggressive for a full Singles race.

Is HYROX pace closer to 10K pace?

For a well-prepared athlete it can be around fresh 10K pace or slightly slower. First-timers and athletes less comfortable at the stations often need a larger allowance.

Does Roxzone count in running pace?

Official results report run segments and Roxzone separately. Your total race distance and elapsed time still include transitions, so do not use average race pace as if it were eight clean kilometres.
