Zone 2 running when your watch disagrees

Zone 2 is useful because it keeps easy training easy. The label becomes unhelpful when runners defend a watch number against their own breathing. Here is how to use the estimate without becoming trapped by it.

The short answer

Start with a heart-rate range, then verify it by effort. You should be able to speak in full sentences, breathing should remain controlled, and the run should finish with more available than you used. If heat, hills or fatigue push heart rate up, slow down—even if yesterday's pace was faster.

Why Apple Watch and Garmin disagree

The optical sensor is only one part of the answer. Devices can use different maximum-heart-rate values, zone models, resting-HR inputs and sport-specific settings. Before deciding one watch is wrong, inspect the actual bpm boundaries behind “Zone 2.”

Cardiac drift is information

On a long easy run, heart rate may rise while pace stays constant. Heat, dehydration and accumulating fatigue are common contributors. That does not mean the first number was “wrong”; it means the cost of the pace changed. For an easy session, slow down or walk briefly instead of turning the final third into moderate work.

Is Zone 2 60–70% or 70–80% of max heart rate?

Both labels appear because five-zone systems are not standardized. A common model calls 6070% of max HR Zone 2; another may place an aerobic zone higher. Compare the boundaries, not just the zone number.

Is it okay to walk during a Zone 2 run?

Yes. For a beginner, on hills or in heat, walking can be the correct way to keep an easy aerobic effort easy. Continuous running is not the purpose of the session.

Why does heart rate rise at the same pace?

Cardiovascular drift can occur as body temperature rises, fluid is lost and fatigue accumulates. Slow down if the session is meant to stay easy rather than defending the original pace.
